Loudspeaker simulation software based on the finite-element and boundary-element methods is described. It is demonstrated that the use of an axisymmetric, uncoupled model allows for a sufficiently accurate prediction of the acoustic field arising from midrange loudspeakers. An optimization system that accepts as input a required form of the on-axis sound pressure level response and outputs the corresponding profile is described. The system is validated by constructing a prototype device optimized to a mechanical filter design criterion, and the potential of the system is demonstrated by optimizing to a smoothness design criterion.
