A High-Performance Voltage-Controlled Amplifier Using Positive Feedback

Document Thumbnail

A novel high-performance voltage-control amplifier is presented which successfully uses positive feedback to provide "true gain," such as that provided by standard log-antilog designs. All aspects of design regarding noise and distortion performance are discussed. It is demonstrated that distortion can be introduced in a variety of ways without proper design. Each stage of the design is optimized and the final prototype network is shown. Test results demonstrate that distortion on the order of 0.01% can be achieved for gains in excess of 20 dB along with a dynamic range of over 100 dB. The positive-feedback approach eliminates the need for global frequency compensation and results in an extremely stable and fast response.
