A Sound-Field Simulation System and Its Application to a Seat-Selection System

Document Thumbnail

A computer modeling system and an auralization system was describe as they are used for evaluating the acoustical properties of a space sound for designing both a sound field in a room and a room reinforcement system. Application for a seat-selection system that will allow an audience to select their most preferred seats in a concert hall is also discussed. In this simulation system, it is assumed that sound consists of three components-the direct sound, the reflections computed by the mirror-image method (MIM), and the remaining reverberation. The practical method to reproduce these three components precisely is summarized. The reliability of the reproduced sound fields was tests in terms of both the objective acoustical indexes (STI, MTI) and the subjective index relating to speech intelligibility. Agreement of the results obtained in both real and simulated sound fields as well as to calculate the objective parameters of a sound field. The procedure described includes the following four orthogonal factors-listening level, initial time-delay gap, subsequent reverberation time, and interaural cross correlation-which are related to individual preferences of sound fields. The seat-selectionsystem offers the audience the most preferred seats by using the results of subjective preference tests and the four computed acoustical parameters.
