A Digital Approach to Time-Delay Spectrometry

Time-delay spectrometry (TDS) is used to measure the frequency response of acoustical and electric systems. the design and the development of a completely digital implementation of a TDS system using an IBM-AT and the Ariel DSP-16 date acquisition board are explained. Employing a technique similar to that used for TDS measurements, the energy-time curve (ETC) of acoustical systems can be obtained. The theory and mathematical analysis of the TDS/ETC system are discussed with emphasis on the actual digital implementation. Examples demonstrate the operation of the system and, at the same time, disclose some of its subtle limitations.
