Conventional microphone arrays for true-stereo recording have a number of shortcomings. To improve upon these, a new stereo microphone array using boundary technology has been developed: the Stereo Ambient Sampling System. The operating principles and drawbacks of conventional stereo microphone arrays are examined, the construction and operating principles of the new array are described, and it is explained by theory and measurement how the new system overcomes the drawbacks of previous arrays.
