Digital Measurement and Comparison of Current-Voltage Output Capability of Amplifiers and Demands of Loudspeakers

Document Thumbnail

A digital instrument is described which captures and plots the locus of the limiting values of current and voltage drive available from an audio amplifier and compares it with the measured current-voltage demands of a particular loudspeaker. Based on a recent analog design by Baxandall, it offers improved clarity of display and the ability to store, scale, and compare amplifier and loudspeaker characteristics. The results may be used to optimize amplifier protection circuits and are presented for particular amplifier-loudspeaker combinations, indicating the maximum undistorted power available using program, swept-frequency, and white-noise inputs.
