A signal which is recorded on magnetic tape undergoes a change in amplitude and frequency before it appears at the output of the recording-reproducing system. The magnitude of the change can be determined by measuring the AM and FM side bands which are generated in the process of recording and reproducing. The tape, as well as the transport design, will influence the side band amplitude. It is possible to predict the degree of amplitude modulation a recorded signal will exhibit by measuring the dc magnetization tape noise.
