Engineers have developed many methods of quantifying the performance of audio equipment to permit objective comparisons. We will examine the techniques in common use today for characterizing such performance. The concepts of amplitude, frequency, and phase, basic to all measurements, are developed. The many types of distortion measurements are described and some of their characteristics are compared. A section is included which outlines the basic test equipment required for a test bench.
