The Subjective Effect and Measurement of ADC-DAC Transfer Characteristic Discontinuity

Document Thumbnail

Differential linearity error in audio analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters can produce discontinuities in the transfer characteristics, with consequent audible impairment of the signal. Subjective tests have been conducted to determine the impairment cause, and results are presented. Conventional analog distortion measurement methods are insensitive to the distortion products caused by discontinuities and can be difficult to interpret. A computer-based measurement technique is described which is sensitive to these distortion products and indicates the size of a discontinuity and its approximate position in the transfer characteristic.
