The technique currently used for making the surface pattern visible on a recorded tape is reviewed. Use is made of the technique to investigate the field configuration around a recording gap. Some indication of the field direction is also obtained. The recording field has been studied under conditions which produce interference response of an underbiased recording and evidence of some relationship is given.
