Time-Frequency Distributions of Loudspeakers: The Application of the Wigner Distribution

Document Thumbnail

The application of the Wigner distribution in the analysis of loudspeakers is discussed. The Wigner distribution of a signal can be interpreted as a distribution of the signal energy in time and frequency. It is a basic time-frequency distribution, and it has properties that allow simple physical interpretations. Furthermore the Wigner distribution facilitates the interpretation of other time-frequency distributions since these distributions can be expressed as a convulotion of the Wigner distribution and a weight function determined by the particular distribution considered. The Wigner distribution of the impulse response of a loudspeaker can therefore provide useful information about the transient behavior of the loudspeaker, and it enables a designer to formulate optimization criteria for this behavior.
