Steps in the development of a pickup cartridge, starting with results of listening tests to determine any relationship between subjective quality and transducer type, are presented. Results of equivalent model and finite-element analysis of mechanical components are compared with those measured using conventional measurement techniques as well as computer analysis of amplitude, phase, and decay characteristics based on impulse signals. Finally the results of the work are discussed.
