Root-Locus Technique for Vented-Box Loudspeaker Design

Document Thumbnail

Throughout the last decade the analytical design technique known as Thiele-Small analysis has been used to obtain "optimum alignments" of vented-box loudspeaker parameters. This approach uses the basic tenets of electric filter design theory. Sincer a filter has equally stringent passband and stopband requirements, one may ask what benefit would be obtained from loosening the stopband requirements. Indeed it would be beneficial to be able to look at responses associated with a range of parameter values to ascertain whether they meet the requirements of any particular application. A set of root-locus diagrams are presented which serve this purpose. Points on these diagrams can be used to infer system responses through the use of asymptotic Bode-plotting techniques. These diagrams suffice to infer the response of any proposed set of system parameters encountered over a broad range of practical vented-box loudspeaker designs.
