Design of Function Generators to Generate Specified Intermodulation Levels

Document Thumbnail

Resistor-diode function generators are commonly designed to meet a given nonlinear input-output specification in terms of a defined characteristic from which a set of break points is chosen as the first step in the design procedure. In some applications, however, such a characteristic may not be available and the function-generator specification defined only in terms of relative magnitudes of signal and intermodulation products. (Predistortion networks for amplifier linearization are a case in point.) A simple technique is demonstrated by which the necessary break points can be determined from intermodulation data alone.
