A method is described for improved decoding of Reed-Solomon block data encoded in a cross-interleave Reed-Solomon code (CIRC). Using a new interpretation of the data flow, the encoded data are processed through several identical decoders without changing the data format. The result is a composite decoder consisting of several identical decoders operating in series. By using this method the input symbol error rate can be increased by a factor of 3 above that of conventional decoders for equivalent output error rates.
