Reentrant Compression and Adaptive Expansion for Optimized Noise Reduction

Document Thumbnail

A recent innovation in FM broadcasting provides extended-range noise-reduced stereo reception, compatibly, with the existing service. Signal redundancy permits the use of an infinity-to-1 or greater slope amplitude compressor at the transmitter; at the receiver, an expander is employed which adapts to be precisely complementary to the compressor. This novel form of audio companding offers major advantages over conventional noise-reduction methods.
