High-Fidelity Loudspeakers with Boronized Titanium Diaphragms

A process of boronizing titanium is developed to produce high-quality diaphragms for loudspeakers. A titanium diaphragm is buried in a mixed power of boron, carbon, and sodium carbonate, and is heated. Titanium borides in the form of TiB and TiB(2) are obtained at the diaphragm surface. 10 min of treatment at a 25-µm thick titanium diaphragm at 1200° C gives a Young's modulus E of 2.5 x 10(11) N/m(2), a density P of 4.2 x 10(3)kg/m(3), and a boronized depth of 5 µm. The ratio E/p of boronized titanium is about 2.5 times tht of titanium. Using boronized titanium diaphragms, wide-range, low-distortion loudspeakers having excellent transient response can be realized.
