Acoustical Response of an Enclosure

At present the reverberation criterion is still the most widely established criterion for an objectivized evaluation of enclosure acoustics, although it contains considerable intrinsic imperfections. In the acoustic design of an enclosure, the values of the reverberation time for several key frequencies of the audio range are usually specified, those frequencies being mostly the center frequencies of octave bands. Acoustic designers will choose those types and quantities of corrective absorbents that shall fill in the inevitable basic absorption in the enclosure until the specified reverberation times are reached (within some tolerance limits). The computation procedure includes a sort of iterative optimization along a total of N specified frequencies. It is possible to perform such a procedure rather quickly by means of a hand-held programmable calculator. A possible program for that purpose is presented, including a typical example.
