Because of their relatively low sensitivity, electret headphones require high signal voltages to generate the customary sound pressure levels in the ear. An electronic amplifier for producing such signal voltages is described. For an output equivalent of 110 dB SPL in an artificial ear, the harmonic distortion of the amplifier was in the range of 0.2%, which was lower than the distortion of push-pull electret headphones. The distortion characteristic, particularly at low frequencies, was superior to that of the commonly used transformers.
