Ambience-Related Transmission Systems (ARTS)

Document Thumbnail

An experimental pentaphonic (five-loudspeaker) reproduction system is described. Correlation measurements were carried out between ear signals as received from a dummy head to determine the homogeneity of the reproduced sound field. Specially recorded program material was used for subjective evaluation of directional properties and diffuseness in the listening area. The influence of interchannel crosstalk was investigated when using a three-channel matrix. The investigation, undertaken to contribute to the development of surround-sound systems, reveals that more accurate reproduction of music can be achieved compared with common quadraphonic (four-loudspeaker) arrangements. A well-spread frontal sound picture-up to 110 degrees-and stable sound images are produced.
