Fast Room Acoustic Analyzer (FRA) Using Public Telephone Line and Computer

Document Thumbnail

The recent development of high-fidelity audio equipment has forced us to recognize the importance of the acoustic properties of the listening room. A problem in pursuing research on the properties of the room is that the measurement of room acoustics is one of the most complex and time-consuming tasks in the field of audio engineering. It takes a full day to measure a relatively small room and an additional few days to analyze the data. This situation may be no problem for room acoustic engineers who work on designing large halls and studios, but the complexity is too great for the measurement of small rooms for audio reproduction. Bringing and setting up a number of measuring instruments in the actual listening room, which in most cases is a living room, and staying there for more than a few hours is not practical. To overcome these inconveniences of the conventional room acoustic measuring system, a unique system for room acoustic measurement and analysis has been developed. By connecting the measuring terminal with a computer through an acoustic coupler and a public telephone line, a compact, simple, and fast room acoustic analyzer has been developed. The measuring procedure with the new analyzer is almost fully automatic. The time required for the measurement and analysis is shortened to one tenth to one hundredth of that required by the conventional system.
