Creating Source Elevation Illusions by Spectral Manipulation

Monaural hearing sensitivity curves indicate that the external ear produces specific distinguishable features in the transformations of incident spectra, which are dependent upon source elevation. These features can be imposed electronically on certain signals presented from a single stationary source to a monaural listener. By appropriate manipulation of these spectral features, the illusion of continuously variable source elevation (from approximately -45° to +45°) may be created in the vertical plane containing the interaural axis. The significance of these findings to perception of reproduced sound image location is discussed.
