Magnetic Recording for Original Recordings

Why did it take half a century from the time Valdemar Poulsen applied for a patent on his magnetic recording device for it to become the most important tool in the sound recording industry? This paper reviews the history of this development and dwells for a time on how and why it is the focal point in the everyday operation of the recording studio.
