The work of Maxfield and Harrison in the 1920s and that of Hunt and Pierce in 1938 laid the foundation for fine-groove and long-playing records. Low mechanical impedance pickups, inspired by Hunt and Pierce, made possible the commercial realization of fine-groove recording. This is manifest in the 33 1/3 r/min long-playing record and in the miniaturization of the 78-r/min single by the 7-inch (17mm) 45-r/min record.
