First published information on the feasibility of magnetic recording appeared in 1888. The history is reviewed in brief. An attempt is made to portray and review the sporadic nature and rate of technical development, including major factors responsible. A short summary is given of building an industry within an industry: the background of stereo-8 tape and its impact on tape technology, FM broadcasting, the music industry, and the economic life it created for the electronic sound product market and the companies associated with it. The Unisette and Elcast tape systems' possible market impact is mentioned. Finally, the author's firm position on the future of discrete quad is outlined.
