There are artists who exceptionally justify the existence of the recording industry. With no attempt to examine them all, or even name them, some of the characteristics which they seem to have in common are explored. Whether they are cause or effect may not always be evident, because each is unique as is his particular art. But similarities of nature exist, and with a few personal reminiscences, I hope to reveal some of the structure of the great artist.
