The 1977 season of the Filarmonica de las Americas in Mexico City was broadcast (and recorded for delayed broadcasting) in the SQ(1) quadraphonic mode. A "Ghent microphone system" was used as a principal microphone, with accent microphones added as required. Placed in front of the orchestra, the Ghent microphone provided a conventional single-point stereo pickup with the house ambience encoded in the surround mode. A unique method of sorround-sound orchestra pickup was devised by placing the microphone in the middle of the orchestra, facing the audience but favoring the strings, and reversing the encoded output channels left for right in order to preserve the correct left-right instrumental placement for the listener.
