Defects in Magnetic Recording Tape: Their Cause and Cure

Document Thumbnail

The presence of imperfections in the surface of magnetic tapes has been a problem in the computer, tleemetering, and home recording fields. Tape squeal, sticking, and level variations have been caused by deposits on the head due to the shearing of imperfections in the oxide. Because of the effect of level variation in the computer field, the latter phenomenon has generally been referred to as -dropout.- Through improved binder formulation and coating techniques, a precision tape has been developed in which coating imperfections are virtually eliminated as a source of dropouts.
