The development of horn theory from Rayleight through Webster, Hanna and Slepian, Percy Wilson, P. B. Flanders, and Paul Voigt up to the comprehensive analyses by Harry Olson and Leo Beranek is described. An account is included of some early experiments by the senior author on methods of folding horns. A description is also given of a recent acoustic phonograph with a fabulous response down to 30 Hz thanks to loading by an external exponential horn that is curved rather than folded.
