Transmitter Limitations in Achieving High Amplitude Modulation Percentages

Document Thumbnail

Competitive AM broadcasting today compels us to seek highest average modulation consistent with limits on peaks dictated by good engineering practice and law. Reducing program peak-to-average ratios with contemporary signal processing devices permits approximating theoretically achievable modulation levels. However, it is shown that fundamental transmitter characteristics preclude full realization. Measurements of typical transmitters indicate that substantial improvement in transient response and amplitude/phase characteristics is needed.
