Sound reinforcement systems, when properly installed, should provide a predominant direct field at all listening positions. The primary effect of the reverberant field should be on howlback. Therefore it should be possible to design a complete system in the laboratory, equalizing separately for the direct and reverberant fields by using free-field and mean-energy-density measurements. In situ equalization could then be confined to the elimination of high Q, feedback-enhanced moded.
