Basic factors determining the conditions of dynamic contact between magnetic head and magnetic tape are considered; namely, air film lubrication, anticlastic tape curvature, and incompatibility of longitudinal tape bending with the head mirror curvature. Recommendations for constructing the head-tape system are given.
