Development of an Advanced Fe2 O3 Cassette Tape Coating

Document Thumbnail

Major considerations in the development of a magnetic tape coating specifically designed for high-performance audio casssette applications are described. The new coating contains stable time-proven gamma ferric oxide (yFe/2 0/2) particles characterized by an improved particle morphology and length -to-width ratios of 10:1 or greater. Th'se particles are held in a binder system formulated to produce an increase of 11% in volume loading over a standrd fine particle oxide coating with squareness ratios approaching 0.9. The high degree of packing density and particle orientation results in audio cassette tapes showing sensitivity improvements of 2 dB at 500 Hz and 4 to 5 dB at 10 Hz compared to the best ferric-oxide cassette tapes previously available.
