Using the Illiac II digital computer, a method for analyzing musical instrument tones was developed using a non-Fourier signal representation. The method is especially applicable to the attack transients of the tones and detects inharmonic partials and frequency changes. The result is a simple mathematical representation which requires a relatively small number of parameters to completely specify the tone. Analysis and resynthesis of actual tones verified the validity of the procedure.
