A final step in the evolution of condenser microphones from bulky, expensive laboratory standards to small, self-contained units is the development of a reliable electret for high voltage biasing. Pertinent electret properties are described, and recent progress and problems related to electret microphones are noted. Advances in materials and cartridge design are reported, and the resulting improvements in reliability and perfomance described.
