The classical stimuli employed for investigating the mechanisms of hearing have been tones, broadband noises and clicks. They ahve been employed in a wide variety of acoustic experiments whose results seem now to be leading to the conclusion that there are a number of aspects of hearing that cannot be adequately understood in terms of these stimuli. Expanding the repertoire of well defined stimuli seems now to be called for. Some examples of such stimuli and their effects on the auditory system are discussed.
