When a power amplifier must be used close to its overload limit, it is difficult to adjust the controls by ear so as to reach but not exceed this limit and thus have good sound quality. Circuits used in high-fidelity amplifiers are described, which are sensitive to distortion but independent of the level and which give a visual indication when the limit has been reached.
