Dropouts are examined from an instrumentation approach. Various methods of treating and handling magnetic tapes before and after recording are described to minimize dropouts. The effectiveness of these methods are compared. Dropouts are defined, detection equipment described, and differences between audible and measurable data explained. Dropout degraded information can sometimes be improved by some processing techniques.
