The use of magnetic recording tape for the more critical types of recording has made new tape-testing methods necessary. This paper describes an instrument for making instantaneous uniformity-of-response tests by locating and registering the number of individual cycles of output voltage whose amplitudes are below a pre-set level. This threshold level is the dc control voltage for an AND gate. It is set on the basis of a percentage of the ac peak voltage entering the gate so that, if the threshold control is set at 50%, the ac peak voltage must exceed 50% in order for the gate to operate. The electronic circuits, particularly the voltage-sensing circuits, are described and mechanical requirements for the tape transport mentioned.
