Compact condenser microphones with simple, rugged structures have been developed using the electret principle. These microphones are resistant to high humidity and temperature, insensitive to solid-borne vibrations, and undamaged by shock. Particular attention in the design has been given to maintaining a good signal-to-noise ratio as the physical dimensions are reduced down to as small as 0.1 inch in diameter. The operating characteristics of several subminiature microphones are described.
