Subtractive Dither for Internet Audio

Document Thumbnail

Audio files with 8-bit word length and low sampling rates are currently popular on the Internet. A subtractive dithering scheme is proposed which is well suited to such formats and to the widespread availability of 16-bit playback hardware. In addition, a method for the automatic detection of files that use this scheme is presented.
