A linear theoretical model of the electromagnetic field associated with a short-coil, long-magnet loudspeaker is developed. Results show that the resistance of the voice coil is reduced and its inductance increased by replacing the steel near the voice coil with a polymer-based magnetic powder composite. This eliminates eddy currents near the coil and is suggested as a mechanism by which the third-harmonic electromotive field in the coil is reduced. Calculated values of impedance agree well with experimental data.
