History and Development of Stereophonic Sound Recording

The pioneering work on stereophonic reproduction by Dr. Fletcher and the Bell Laboratories is described. Consideration is given to the relative importance of frequency range, noise, and distortion in monaural vs multichannel reproduction. Distinction is made between binaural and stereophonic reproduction. Thge realization in practical form of the requirements laid down by early research through the use of magnetic tape recording is described. Phase relations are analyzed and requirements for the preservation of three-dimensional effect are defined.
