A non-magnetic wire under tension in a magnetic field possesses many of the properties of a high-Q resonant LC circuit. The vibrating wire element has excellent stability and extremely high Q. These features, plus the fact that the wire can be tuned over a wide range of frequencies by varying the tension, result in a device which can be adapted to the measurement of physical variables used as a frequency or time standard or used as a bandpass filter or frequency discriminator in communication and control circuits.
