The possibility of widening the bandwidth and the dynamic range of a recording and reproduction system maintaining compatibility with Compact Disc (CDs) or digital audio tape (DAT) is investigated by computer simulation. A wide-band signal which is analog-to-digital converted by a sampling frequency twice that of CDs or DAT with 16 or more bits is split into two subbands. The higher band signal is coded by ADPCM and embedded in the least significant bit of 16-bit data. The lower band signal, which is coded by 15-bit noise-shaping quantization with subtractive dither, has an effective dynamic range wider than that of CDs or DAT. The method to generate good subtractive dither is studied.
