Aircraft Public Address System Operation under High-Level Ambient Noise Conditions

This paper outlines the reasons for and the requirements of a good public address system in airplanes. A résumé of the pertinent characteristics of speech and hearing is given. The sources and character of the noises in flight and the effects of these noises on speech communication are discussed. The possibilities of noise reduction and the developments to date are outlined. The qualification of each of the system components necessary for satisfactory operation in high-level noise fields is given, and the need for further tests and development work is pointed out.
