An integrated services infrastructure capable of providing house sync is now within reach, making use of IEEE 1394. The key to building a scalable, synchronous network is a full understanding and utilization of the IEEE p1394.1 bridging standard. Means for coping with some scalability requirements via split bridges, with physically separated portals and interconnection by an implementation-dependent or proprietary technology, are discussed. A method for distributing network time for synchronization in 1394 is presented, using 1394 networks' inherent cycle-time distribution. Finally, manufacturers are asked to seriously consider implementing IEEE 1394 interfaces in new designs which are compliant to the relevant specifications from IEEE, IEC, 1394ta and AES. This equipment must be able to communicate across bridges, and thus be bridge-aware according to IEEE p1394.1.
