Conferencing with Pitch-Excited Channel Vocoders

Document Thumbnail

The use of digital vocoder systems presents many problems in the area of conferencing communications. Certain of these problems are discussed and possible solutions are suggested. Voice-excited vocoders have many advantages over pitch-excited vocoders from the standpoint of conferencing; however, the pitch-excited vocoder has the advantage of greater bandwidth savings. Effort spent in development of conferencing techniques for pitch-excited vocoders should be repaid many times by the savings obtained in bandwidth requirements. Thus this paper deals almost exclusively with the problems involved in conferencing with pitch-excited vocoders.
