During the past year, we were approached by several acoustical consulting firms to design or submit an existing small speaker for evaluation in sound reinforcing systems; namely, for use in paging in large areas and also to provide for background music. In summing up the requirements set forth by the various firms and evaluating existing speakers in use, it was found that the speaker of the standard 5" mounting and having an EIA sensitivity of 46 to 47 db with the power handling of 8 watts sine wave without cone breakup- This plus an even distribution of sound from 200 cycles to 6,000 cycles with a minimum amount of variation from on axis to 45 degrees off axis and to work in an enclosure as small as 60 cubic inches would satisfy most requirements and give about an 8 db power gain.
