The signal overload of individual amplifiers within audio control consoles is a problem that has plague operators since the first console appeared. From an engineering standpoint, however, this problem has received little to no attention, and operators, through the years, have been conditioned to accept the overload situation as a necessary evil. It is an axiom, that properly designed consoles utilizing currently available components are -inherently designed- to incur signal overload-the more complex the system, the more susceptible to overload conditions. This status results, primarily, from the input dynamic range requirement and, secondarily, from the gain margin practices employed for attenuator operation.
